On Tuesday, first matches of open bracket quarterfinal ties were played at the 2023 FIDE World Cup and top-seed Magnus Carlsen played at his very best to secure a victory against Indian youngster Gukesh using black pieces. With this win, Carlsen is just one draw away from securing his place in the semi-final stage. Meanwhile, Fabiano Caruana was held to draw by Leinier Dominguez Perez and he will be eager to win the return clash on Wednesday. Elsewhere, Arjun Erigaisi won against fellow Indian Praggnanandhaa in the all-Indian tie and Vidit Gujrathi settled for draw against Nijat Abasov after a marathon match that lasted 109 moves.
In the women’s tournament, semi-final ties began on Tuesday and Nurgyul Salimova continued her stellar form after managing a draw against Anna Muzychuk. Meanwhile, Aleksandra Goryachkina managed to defeat Zhongyi Tan using black pieces and established 1-0 lead. If Goryachkina manages to avoid defeat in her Wednesday clash against Zhongyi, she will qualify for the championship match.
