According to the official schedule, the fifth-round ties of the 2023 FIDE World Cup will be played on Saturday. It is confirmed that Indian youngster Praggnanandhaa will clash against Berkes Ferenc and Vidit Gujrathi will face-off against Ian Nepomniachtchi. In the women’s tournament, Indian star Dronavalli Harika will play against Goryachkina Aleksandra.

2023 FIDE World Cup Round 5 schedule, date, time, venue, & latest results

On Friday, Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa stunned Hikaru Nakamura to emerge victorious in their fourth-round tie at the 2023 FIDE World Cup. During the first tiebreak, Praggnanandhaa won both of the rapid games to clinch the win and qualify for the next round. Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen overcame tenacious challenge of German youngster Vincent Keymer to progress towards the next stage. Elsewhere, Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated Indian star Nihal Sarin 2-0 in their rapid tiebreak and Gukesh won 1.5-0.5 against Esipenko.

In the women’s section, World Champion Ju Wenjun crashed out of the competition after succumbing to defeat against German star Elisabeth Paehtz. In another surprising result, fourth-seed Indian ace Humpy Koneru lost both of her rapid ties against Georgian Bella Khotenashvili and got herself eliminated from the competition. Following her win against Indonesian Medina Warda Aulia, Bulgarian player Nurgyul Salimova qualified for the quarterfinal.
