Following his comfortable victory against Ferenc Berkes, Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa won his FIDE World Cup fifth-round tie by score of 1.5-0.5 and qualified for the quarterfinal. It is confirmed that he will play against compatriot Arjun Erigaisi with a place in the semi-final at stake. By winning their respective fifth-round ties, three Indian youngsters including Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh, & Arjun Erigaisi qualified for the quarterfinal of 2023 FIDE World Cup. Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Abasov Nijat, & Dominguez Perez Leinier also advanced towards the quarterfinal. On Monday, the tie-break match between Vidit Gujrathi and Ian Nepomniachtchi will be played to determine which player will grab the remaining spot in quarterfinal. Notably, Praggnanandhaa defeated Ferenc Berkes 1.5-0.5 in his fifth-round tie and similarly, Gukesh scored 1.5-0.5 victory versus Wang Hao. Among other matches, Magnus Carlsen won 2-0 against seasoned veteran Vasyl Ivanchuk and Fabiano Caruana won 1.5-0.5 against Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

In the women’s bracket, three of the four quarterfinal ties will be decided through tiebreak as all those ties ended 1-1 after Sunday’s games. Till now, only Tan Zhongyi has qualified for the semi-final thanks to her 1.5-0.5 victory against Bella Khotenashvili Bella. Meanwhile, Indian star Harika Dronavalli settled for 1-1 draw against Aleksandra Goryachkina and the winner of this tie will be decided on Monday.
