On Sunday, Abasov Nijat played his second game of the semi-final tie against Magnus Carlsen using white pieces and despite his best attempts, he had to settle for a draw. Since Carlsen had defeated Nijat in the first game, this result meant that Carlsen won the semi-final tie by score of 1.5-0.5 and qualified for his maiden FIDE World Cup final. In the other semi-final tie, Fabiano Caruana failed to snatch a victory against Praggnanandhaa and since both games of this semi-final tie ended in draw, the winner will be decided through Monday’s tiebreaks. It is confirmed that the winner of this tiebreaker will clash against Magnus Carlsen with the championship at stake.
Elsewhere, the women’s tournament final will be also decided via tiebreaks after Aleksandra Goryachkina drew both of her games against Nurgyul Salimova and score remained 1-1 after two games. On Monday, the women’s bracket final tiebreaks will be played and the winner will be crowned as the 2023 FIDE Women’s World Cup winner. On the other hand, Anna Muzychuk finished in third-place of the women’s bracket after winning 1.5-0.5 against Tan Zhongyi.
