At the 2023 FIDE World Cup, top-seed Magnus Carlsen won his first game of the semi-final tie against Abasov Nijat to establish 1-0 lead. If Carlsen manages to avoid defeat in Sunday’s game, he will qualify for the championship match. Although Carlsen is in a favorable position to qualify for his maiden World Cup final, Abasov caused him plenty of trouble throughout the first game and can do the same in the second game. Meanwhile, Fabiano Caruana was held to a draw by Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa in the other semi-final.
Meanwhile, first game of the women’s tournament final featuring Aleksandra Goryachkina vs. Nurgyul Salimova ended as a tie after both players demonstrated a desire to trade down towards a neutral endgame. On Sunday, the second game of the final will be played and if it finishes as a draw, the champion will be decided through tiebreaks, which is scheduled for Monday. In the third-place Play-off, GM Anna Muzychuk defeated GM Tan Zhongyi in an opposite-colored bishop ending.
