On Tuesday, the first game of the 2023 FIDE World Cup final was played and although Indian youngster R Praggnanandhaa exerted pressure on Magnus Carlsen with his stellar play, Carlsen kept his calm and forced a draw with black pieces. Following this result, the score is tied at 0.5-0.5 and the winner of Wednesday’s game can clinch the title. In the second game of final, Carlsen will play using white pieces and experts have labelled him as the overwhelming favorite. If this game ends in a ties, tiebreaks will be played on Thursday to decide the open bracket champion.
Elsewhere, local favorite Nijat Abasov defeated Fabiano Caruana using white pieces in the first game of the third-place Playoffs. Notably, this was Caruana’s maiden classical loss in this tournament. Following his win, Abasov is in a comfortable position to finish in third-place and secure his berth in the 2024 FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament.
