At the 2023 World Chess Championship, there is no defending champion as Magnus Carlsen decided to withdraw. However on Saturday, fans witnessed the return of former challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi as he managed to use his experience for dominating the majority of the match. Although Nepo’s stellar 27th move allowed him to be on the brink of victory, his miscalculated 31st move changed the rhythm of the game. Later the 37th move almost ensured the game would end in a draw and both players indeed settled for a draw after 49th move.
A new world chess champion will be chosen at the World Chess Championship 2023, which runs from April 7 to May 1. The St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan, will host the games of this event at this time. Ding admitted he was nervous throughout the game and hence, he was unable to calculate the best possible moves but, he was positive about his chances in the second game.
