After a series of major wins against world No.2 Hikaru Nakamura and world No.3 Fabiano Caruana, R Praggnanandhaa lost out to Magnus Carlsen in the finals.
FIDE Chess World Cup 2023 prize money
As per reports, the total prize money for the FIDE Chess World Cup 2023 is roughly โน1,51,392,240. From that massive prize pool, the winner received approximately โน90,93,551 ($110k), while the second-place finisher got around โน66,13,444 ($80k).
Magnus Carlsen vs R Praggnanandhaa FIDE Chess World Cup 2023 final
Magnus Carlsen and R Praggnanandhaa had a fierce clash with the first two classical games on Tuesday and Wednesday ending in draws. As such, the final game went into a tiebreak where Magnus Carlsen won 1.50.5. Carlsen had a food poisoning episode and didnโt look sharp in the first classical game. However, he made a remarkable comeback in the tie-break.
In the first game, Praggnanandhaa, played with white making the first move -e4 -, and then got into a better position after some careful maneuvering. At one point of the game, both \players were left with their two rooks and minor pieces. Carlsen had two knights, while Praggnanandhaa had a knight and a light-colored bishop. The Indian teenager eventually surrendered the point after coming under time pressure and Carlsen won in 45 moves.
In the game 2, Carlsen began with e4 with Praggnanandhaa facing a must-win situation. The young teenager came under time pressure early eventually agreed to a draw with Carlsen holding the upper hand. The final match ended with a 25+10 tie-break after 22 moves.

Following the win, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, tweeted:
โPraggnanandhaa can come back with a candidate spot and a truly wonderful result.”
He posted another tweet congratulating Carlsen:

Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaaโs coach R B Ramesh also tweeted:
