In a thrilling turn of events at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, 55-year-old Grandmaster Vasyl Ivanchuk stunned GM Wesley So, as Ukraine secured a sensational victory over top-seeded United States in round four. Adding to the drama, reigning champions Uzbekistan, the only undefeated team at the 2022 Olympiad, were handed a surprising 3-1 loss by Vietnam.

In the Women’s 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad, seven teams remain with perfect scores. China tops the standings, holding a slim advantage through tiebreaks, following their third 4-0 sweep, this time against England. Notable upsets in the round included Mongolia’s 2.5-1.5 win over Spain and Uzbekistan’s second consecutive upset, defeating Bulgaria 2.5-1.5.
Meanwhile, India’s open and women’s teams both claimed commanding victories in their fourth-round matches in Budapest, Hungary. The open team dominated Serbia 3.5-0.5, while the women’s team delivered an identical 3.5-0.5 win over France.
Indian star Gukesh Dommaraju, set to face Ding Liren in the World Championship this November, triumphed over Alexandr Predke while playing with the black pieces. Arjun Erigaisi, also playing black, outmaneuvered Aleksandr Indjic, while Vidit Gujrathi, with the white pieces, bested Velimir Ivic. In the fifth round, India’s open team is set to face Azerbaijan, while the women will challenge Kazakhstan.
