Prediction

On Saturday, Richard Gasquet and Felix Auger-Aliassime will face off in the semifinals of the European Open.

At the Firenze Open, Auger-Aliassime won his second championship of the year. He was then given the second seed for the European Open. He was given a bye into the second round of the contest, where he met Manuel Guinard. By defeating the Frenchman 6-3, 6-3, the Canadian moved on to face Dan Evans, the fifth seed, in the quarterfinals. The latter made a good start and took the opening set 6-4. However, Auger-Aliassime bounced back and won the second set in a tiebreak. He easily prevailed 6-2 in the third set to get to the semifinals.

On the other hand, Gasquet upset Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the European Open 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 after holding off three match points in the second set. He next overcame another Swiss player, Dominic Stricker, to proceed to the quarterfinals and face David Goffin. Gasquet took command of the opening set, winning it 6-2 to take the lead in the match. Goffin fought courageously in the second set, forcing a tiebreak in which he had a set point. In the end, Gasquet was able to save it and advance to his second semifinal of the year by winning the tiebreak 8-6.

In order to take command of the game right away, Auger-Aliassime will try to attack from the baseline. With his powerful forehand and effective serve, he can dictate play and win points. The Canadian will concentrate on Gasquet’s forehand, which is by far his weakest wing. The Frenchman will anticipate dominating with his serve, but in order to secure that odd critical break, he will need to return well. His one-handed backhand is among the best in the world and is both strong and graceful. His collection of weapons will be crucial if he wants to prevail.
