Know everything about the hefty wage bill of FC Barcelona who are looking to offload some of the highest wage earners of the club to fit into the La Liga salary cap for 2021
Spanish giants Barcelona have been the most dominant club in Spain as they secured their 31st Copa Del Rey title. Barcelona finished third in the league behind arch-rivals Real Madrid and Atletico. They were eliminated at the round-of-16 of the UEFA Champions League by PSG which came as a shocking defeat.
One trophy is not enough at the club which has won almost everything and does not settle for less. Last year club found itself in a €1.2 billion debt left by the previous board. These unprecedented times of the pandemic have forced La Liga to introduce a new wage cap for all the clubs in the league.
La Liga New Salary Cap And Limit 2021
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Barca had the largest salary bill in Spain’s top flight in 2019-20 which stood at €671 million. However, La Liga’s new limit for the 2020-21 season was €382.7m. Barcelona allowed some leverage in terms of reducing salaries.
They have to reduce their wage bill according to the new guidelines and are not able to register their new signings Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, and Memphis Depay who were all free transfers, and Emerson Royale from Real Betis.
They have an agreement with club legend Lionel Messi which will be a 5-year-deal and has also agreed to a massive pay cut. They will not be able to register their best player who is currently a free agent as preparations for the new season begins.
