Although Delhi Capitals failed to make an impression in the 2023 Indian Premier League and didn’t qualify for the Play-Offs, their disciplined play was recognized by the officials and hence, they were awarded with the Fair Play Award. Although no player from Delhi Capitals were present at the award ceremony, CSK star Ajinkya Rahane collected the award on their behalf.

2023 Indian Premier League: Fair Play Award winner

In the 2023 Indian Premier League Fair Play Award standings, Delhi Capitals finished second with an average rating of 10.07 and hence, they were rewarded with the prestigious honor. Notably, Gujarat Titans finished with an average of 10.18 points-per-game but, weren’t announced as the winners of this prize.

In the Indian Premier League, Fair Play Award is given annually to the squad with the best record of fair play. The foundation for selecting the winner is the points that the umpires gave to the teams. After every game, the three officials—two on-field umpires and a third official—rate how well both sides played.

The maximum number of points that can be awarded to a team in a game is 10, of which four are given for upholding the rules of the game. The other three factors are based on respect for the opposing team, cricket’s rules, & umpires. These three requirements are worth two points each. A team’s performance is deemed to be “good” if it receives two points on the criterion, as opposed to “average” or “bad” if it receives one or zero points.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has won the IPL Fair Play Award the most—seven times—making them the most frequent winners of the prize. The Chennai Super Kings, headed by MS Dhoni, won the inaugural fair play award during the 2008 IPL season. For winning the Fair Play award, team is awarded prize money of INR 10 Lakh.
