At the MCG during the BBL’s Melbourne derby, Adam Zampa made a splash by attempting a runout at the bowler’s end before releasing the ball, a move known as a Mankad.
The Melbourne Stars captain was on fire on Tuesday night, and in the final over of the first inning, he had his crosstown rivals, the Melbourne Renegades, on the ropes.

The moment the Mankad effort, which many believe to have violated the spirit of the game despite being within the rules, was made, Zampa was booed by the audience. “Oh wow. Oh wow. Adam Zampa has made a significant decision in this situation, Channel 7 commentator Jason Richardson stated.
The third umpire denies the Mankad right away.
Shawn Craig, the third umpire, was called up to make the final decision. Craig wanted to see if Zampa’s bowling arm had crossed the vertical axis, which would have made the Mankad attempt ineffective. The runout attempt was rejected because replays clearly revealed Zampa’s arm had crossed the vertical axis before turning around and removing the bails.
Brad Hodge, a former Test hitter and BBL champion, stated, “This is crucial because that’s actually right. Shawn Craig is currently in the hot seat; that’s a really fascinating choice. The umpire made the correct decision. Wowee!”
The Renegades completed their innings at 7-141 when Zampa completed his over, at which point he sprinted off the pitch and kicked the stumps on his way.
