Explained Why Is The Three Lions Football Anthem Offensive And Why Is The FA Banning Its Lyrics

England’s national anthem three Lions lyrics may be dropped before the Qatar World Cup for fear of offending other nations. But how could this be deemed insulting

The Sun believes that England’s famed football hymn might be altered during the Qatar World Cup 2022 due to concerns. That it would be perceived as “arrogant” by other nations.

Why Is The Three Lions Football Anthem Offensive And Why Is The FA Banning Its Lyrics

Since its debut during Euro 96, when England hosted the tournament, the song by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner, and The Lightning Seeds has been a fan favorite. After the squad reached the final against Italy in Euro 2020, it swept the country once more, propelling the track back into the top 10 in the UK.

Why Is THREE LIONS’ ANTHEM ‘OFFENSIVE,’ And Why Is The FA Banning It?

Fans and sportsmen alike are opposed to the music being removed, so how might it be changed and declared offensive?

What Makes THREE LIONS “OFFENSIVE”?

Because of the chant “It’s coming home,” which implies England ‘owns’ the sport, FA officials feel the song may depict the country as arrogant.

English comedians and Three Lions masterminds Baddiel and Skinner previously discussed the music. Claiming that the lyrics are the polar opposite of bragging about the team’s prowess.

Baddiel said Four Four Two about discussing the lyrics with Skinner:  Instead of singing about how we were going to win. We could do one about how we probably won’t. A song about the faith that all supporters have in their team. Despite the pain. It’s far from victorious.

Lightning Seeds vocalist Ian Broudie, who composed the music, remembers playing it for the England team:

The first part of the song is basically about how cr*p we are all the time. And how we’re probably not going to win – and we’re playing it to the squad! Awkward.

What Could be the Substitute For The Classic?

Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond is the favorite to replace Three Lions, and despite being one of England’s most popular singalongs, England veteran Paul Gascoigne is opposed to the choice.

“(Three Lions) runs in our blood. It worked for us in 1996, and it will work for the lads in Qatar,” he told The Sun. The 54-year-old was a member of England’s Euro 96 squad that advanced to the semi-finals.

Ironically, at a ceremony in their honor, the German side that won Euro 96 sang Three Lions.

“The FA have completely lost the plot,” Gascoigne added. “You can’t take that music away from us. Caroline doesn’t even come close. It’s like saying we can’t fly St. George’s flags anymore.”
