The rule that penalises a player for taking off their shirt while celebrating a goal is something Bruno Fernandes has said “has to change.” This is in response to Manchester United winger Amad Diallo’s dismissal for a second caution following his thrilling late goal against Liverpool in their FA Cup quarterfinal.
John Brooks, the referee, gave Amad a second yellow card for taking off his shirt during the frenzied celebrations. After applauding the winger’s goal, Fernandes stated that players should be free to display their emotions.
Why are players booked for removing their shirts off during celebration?
In order to celebrate during a football game, players are not permitted to take off their shirts or else, they are booked. According to the IFAB Laws of the Game, officials must expressly give a yellow card to any player who takes off their shirt while celebrating.
The regulation, which went into effect for the first time in 2004, was created with several purposes in mind. It’s an act that may be construed as unsportsmanlike, but it’s also intended to minimise time wastage.
FIFA rule 3, which deals with fouls and misbehaviour, is stated in the official rules of the game that When a player scores a goal, they can rejoice, but they shouldn’t go overboard. Choreographed celebrations are discouraged and shouldn’t take up too much time.
It is not a cautionable offence (deserving of a yellow card), but players should come back onto the pitch of play as quickly as they can to celebrate a goal. Even if the goal is not allowed, the following players need to be warned:
Climbing onto a perimeter fence and/or approaching the spectators in a manner which causes safety and/or security issues
Acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way
Covering the head or face with a mask or other similar item
Removing the shirt or covering the head with the shirt.”
