What happened at Anfield?

In his programme notes, Jurgen Klopp, the manager on Saturday, admitted that he was “not an expert on English history or the monarchy” and said:

Why did Liverpool play the national anthem?
The Premier League did not mandate that clubs perform “God Save the King” prior to kickoff, but clubs were encouraged to do so.

The Metropolitan Police had said it would back anti-monarchy demonstrations unless they violated newly implemented rules that went into force last week forbidding “locking-on” and causing “serious disruption” or already-existing legislation.
However, on Saturday morning, Republic campaigners were detained, and police confiscated hundreds of “Not My King” placards.
