Every time Chase Elliott wins a NASCAR Cup race, his supporters in his home state of Georgia raise a siren
Why is this the case, and when did the custom begin?
Today’s most well-liked driver in NASCAR is Chase Elliott, who could theoretically show up, finish 36th every weekend, and still win the championship at the end of the season.
Why Do Chase Elliott NASCAR Fans Blow A Siren Each Time He Wins A Cup Race
Since Elliott crossed the finish line first in his #9 Hendrick Camaro, his fans—some of the most devoted in NASCAR history—had a unique celebration. Chase Elliott’s supporters in Dawsonville, Georgia, where he is from, sound a siren instead of all the traditional whoops and shouts.
Why do they do this when he wins, sounding a siren?
The custom of turning on the siren following an Elliott victory predates Chase.
Instead, the siren was played to mark the victories of his father Bill, aka “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville,” who was the original fan favourite in the pool room.
Between Riverside 1983 and Rockingham 2003, Elliott Sr. won 44 Cup races, earning the 1988 Cup title. These victories included the Daytona 500 in 1985 and 1987, the Southern 500 in 1985, 1988, and 1994, the Brickyard 400 in 2002, and the All-Star race in 1986.
Elliott won three of the four NASCAR crown jewel events in 1985, missing just the Coke 600 to become the first driver to win the Winston Million. In 1997, Jeff Gordon matched him.
The siren has now been sounded 16 times in total for Elliott Jr. earning the victory since Chase won his maiden Cup race at Watkins Glen in 2018 during his 99th appearance. The old police siren is simply something pool facility owner Gordon Pirkle used when Bill Elliott started to win; there is no specific reason behind it.
Even Louder For Winning
The Chase Elliott siren may have been played for the longest period of time after his victory at Phoenix in 2020, barring his first victory.
32 years after Bill won his lone Cup championship, it gave Elliott his first Cup victory. As of the second Atlanta race, which Chase Elliott won to record his third victory of the year, it has been sounded three times in 2022.
It’s his first victory at his home track, and the Elliotts are now only the second father-son team to triumph at Atlanta, following a few people by the name of Dale Earnhardt.
