As all of India celebrated its 75th Independence Day, FIFA shocked everybody with its news of banning the Football Association of all of India with immediate effect. The reason for the prohibition of the Association was the involvement of third parties in Indian football created the breach of the s rule provided by FIFA. The suspension came just prior to the next FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, to be held in India.
What effect will the suspension of FIFA have on Indian football?
After the suspension, India will not host the U-17 Women’s Worl Cup, which was scheduled to take place on October 11, 2022. Following the suspension, India will be unable to take part in international football matches. Men’s, women’s and even teams of the different age groups will also be excluded from international football events.
The AIFF hadn’t had a new president in 13 years. Praful Patel had completed three four-year terms and was not eligible for standing as president again. This was as per laws laid down in the National Sports Code.

This is a major blow to Indian Football, as India’s top football clubs will not be able to take part in the AFC cup, AFC Women Club Championship and AFC Champions League Tournaments. All this, the biggest hit for India is that they will not be featured in AFC Cup 2023 Qualifying. However, major Indian football leagues like ISL and I-League will not be adversely affected by the decision and will continue to operate according to schedules.
India U-17 Women’s Team will not be featured at this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup
The Indian team had already qualified for the World Cup, but now the ban will prevent their participation in the tournament. The ban will not be lifted until the AIFF administration has established an adequate national governing body.
Why FIFA Banned AIFF-
FIFA had sent several opinions to the AIFF, and in reply, the Supreme Court of India decided that a total of 36 state federation members and 36 players would be elected to an AIFF governing committee. Unfortunately, the proceedings were delayed and FIFA and AFC appealed the Supreme Court’s decision as a breach of FIFA.
This came in the aftermath of Praul Patel continuing to hold onto his President post illegally for two years despite being at the helm for 12 years, the maximum period in the country. Even after being ousted, he kept meeting with head honchos of state associations to sway decisions in his favour in a bid to keep Indian football under his grasp.
