The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) included the Rainbow Nation among the few nations to indicate non-compliance with anti-doping standards, and the South African squad could be told to compete under the neutral flag as a result.
According to the WADA news release, the South African flag would thus not be allowed to be shown at regional, continental, or international tournaments. “Three Anti-Doping Organizations (ADOs) were found to be in violation of the World Anti-Doping Code (Code),” the statement read. Bermuda and South Africa are the two National Anti-Doping Organizations (NADOs) in dispute, and the Pan American Sports Organization (Panam Sports) is the relevant Major Event Organization (MEO).
In a lengthy statement, the World Anti-Doping Agency elaborated on the penalties for non-compliance. The report stated: “South Africa’s flag will not be flown at regional, continental, and world championships, as well as events organized by major event organizations (other than the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games) until SAIDS (South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport) is Reinstated (sic); “South Africa’s flag will not be flown at the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games until SAIDS is Reinstated (sic).”
According to reports, WADA will make its final verdict public on October 14. Sanctions against South Africa will be put into effect after that date. However, South African sports can exercise their right to challenge the ruling, which can postpone the effects. However, ban would result in both the flag being banned from the Cricket and Rugby World Cup currently ongoing.
