The Badminton World Federation put an interim ban on this serve variation on Friday, a few hours before the Sudirman Cup Finals in Suzhou began, here is why and what is the meaning of the spin serve

It is believed that Marcus Rindshoj of Denmark invented this style, though this cannot be proved.

It significantly reduced rallies and made the serve a potent weapon. Most points were only in play for two or three shots.

A few hours before the Sudirman Cup Finals in Suzhou began on Friday, the Badminton World Federation imposed a temporary ban on this variant.

What’s this serve?

According to reports, the brand-new “spin serve” had its competitive debut at the Polish Open 2023 in March.

Greg Mairs and Jenny Moore, the top-ranked mixed doubles combination in England at the moment, are both competitive badminton players.

They examine serves on their Badminton Insight YouTube channel as well.

What was the reaction in the badminton circles?

This serve first surprised everyone, but it soon became apparent that it may make matches tough to watch. Who would want to watch a game with only serves that could not be returned?

Here is what commentator Gill Clark and Danish veteran HK Vittinghus had to say when the spin serve started to rule discussions:

What does the serve law say?

The shuttle should rise off the server’s racket during a proper service, cross the net, and, if unimpeded, settle on the receiver’s service court (that is, on or inside the boundary lines).

The server’s racket should first hit the shuttle’s base, which was also inserted as one of the sub-sections.

What did the BWF say?

The BWF Council approved a request for a “experimental variation” to the Laws of Badminton on Friday, making it illegal to use the new “spin serve” starting on May 29 until then.

The change to 9.1.5 of Section 4.1 of the BWF Laws of Badminton states that the server must release the shuttle without adding spin and that the server’s racket must first contact the shuttle’s base.

Any violation of the experimental version of the law will be considered a fault.

All BWF-sanctioned international competitions, including the Malaysia Masters and BWF Sudirman Cup Finals, which start on May 14, 2023, are subject to the temporary suspension.
