Explained What Is The “Sagar Parikrama” Program Scheme And UPSC Details

The Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Parshottam Rupala will together inaugurate the “Sagar Parikrama” Program.

The main purpose of the Sagar Parikrama Program is to create a sustainable balance between the usage of marine fisheries resource for food security and the livelihoods of fishers, and coastal people along with the marine ecosystem.

The Sagar Parikrama Program will be accompanied by the State Fisheries officials, Fishermen representatives, Fish-Farmers entrepreneurs, stakeholders, professionals, officials, and Scientists from the entire nation.

A song on Sagar Parikrama Program shall also be released in the contest of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava’. The Government is taking key measures in transforming the fisheries sector and formulating fisheries management plans along with a regulatory framework towards effective& efficient governance to ensure sustainable and balanced development through an ecosystem approach.

Why it is being celebrated & its significance?

India has a huge coastal border comprising of 8118kms and is covered with different countries along with maritime boundaries with countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.

So, in order to thank them and show a sign of gratitude as a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava’ saluting our great freedom fighters, sailors, and fishers and to celebrate and remember 75years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements.

Where it is going to be conducted and dates?

It is proposed to be conducted in all coastal states/UTs through a pre-decided sea route down right from Gujarat, Daman & Diu, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar, and Lakshadweep Islands to have to keep an interaction program with fishermen, fisher communities and stakeholders in these locations and districts in order to know the problems of Coastal Fishers and locals of that area.

The first leg of ‘Sagar Parikrama’ will start on 5 March 2022 from Mandvi and end at the Porbandar coast on 6 March 2022. The distance will be covered from the coastline of Mandvi on the coast of the Arabian Sea in the Kutch district of Gujarat, which is located at the estuary area where the river Rukmavati meets the Gulf of Kutch.
