Experts Warn Against The TikTok’s Viral Mouth Taping Trend

Nowadays, a new fad known as “mouth taping” has emerged on TikTok, in which TikTokers advise a unique approach to treat mouth-breathing difficulties. If you’re wondering what the procedure entails, it simply means that competitors must place a little piece of tape over their lips. The glue used for this is typically medical-grade tape designed for use on the skin. Furthermore, many only apply a tiny quantity of velcro and do not entirely seal their lips.

Nose inhaling is a healthy practice that has several benefits. In an interview with Newsweek, sleep specialist James Wilson, nicknamed The Sleep Geek, outlined several benefits of nasal breathing. He claims it is better than mouth inhaling because it filters out foreign particles and moistens the air we take in. Furthermore, breathing via the nose dilates blood vessels, allowing the body to pump blood more efficiently. Not only that, but James claims that it helps avoid tooth decay, snoring, the effects of asthma, and even poor breath.

Here are a few Dos and Don’ts for newcomers:

  1. Use only tape that is suitable for use on skin cells.
  2. Avoid using too much tape or covering your nostrils.
  3. If you snore and haven’t been checked for sleep apnea, avoid using it.
  4. If you are allergic to the adhesive substance, do not use it.

Here are some Dos and Don’ts:

  1. To get acclimated to the sensation, try the tape when you’re awake.
  2. Do gently seal your lips and lay your tongue on the roof of the mouth.
  3. Consider using mouth tape while light activity.
  4. After checking with your doctor, use it with your CPAP or oral equipment for sleep apnea.
  5. Shave the region to make it easier to remove the tape.
