We’ve all heard of Coachella, but what is Moechella and just how does it get started?

WHAT EXACTLY IS MOECHELLA?

Moechella is a festival organized by the Godspeed GoGo party. The name is said to be a combination of Coachella and also the Washington DC vernacular “moe,”. It means foreigner or friend in favor of “son,” “homie,” or “bro.”

According to the official Insta, Moechella is not celebrated on a set date, hence it is not related to Juneteenth.

Go-go music is played in the street to make people aware of Black popular music. And to respectfully resist development within the city.

Washington, DC is acknowledged as the home of go-go music, a style of funk that is sometimes considered as hip hop’s “cousin.” Born in the late 1960s. It has been consistently loved by the locals, and its fame has grown more than ever, due to a noise claim in 2019.

EXPLAINED ORIGIN OF MOECHELLA:

After a serious complaint from a member of The Shay, a neighbor luxury apartment block. A small Minority vendor in Shaw, known for blaring go-go music from its kiosk, was compelled to turn off its sound.

The complaints had the opposite of the desired effect. As the hashtag #DontMuteDC quickly went viral when the community replied emphatically with a thundering no. Soon after, funk music was back on the right path and spreading across the country.

The tragedy has spawned organizations such as Make GoGo Forever and Viva La GoGo.
