Okay I’m on episode 1 of Inside Man and it’s already 10/10 for proper characterization of a priest (played by David Tennant) — y’all he just left the church office saying, “nobody die or get married, see you Wednesday!” pic.twitter.com/AAHLcscQvX

Overall, the series has two distinct storylines, which come into contact in the later episodes of the series. For the most part, the series focuses on David Tennant’s character Harry Watling, a priest who finds himself far up a stream without a paddle and a Math tutor tied up in his basement.
Meanwhile, the series also pays focus on a storyline featuring Stanley Tucci’s Jefferson Grieff. Grieff is a former criminology professor who spends his time solving cases while waiting on a death row.
Episode one features one such case, which involves a US senator and a mysterious sequence of $253.55 payments.
Inside Man’s Puzzling $253.55 Mystery
Inside Man episode one features Grieff, who receives the case of Senator Claude Kreiner. Kreiner has been receiving a mysterious series of anonymous payments all worth $253.55 – for reasons unknown.
Kreiner further explains how he started receiving the payments three months back all at irregular intervals. He further reveals that he receives them on the days after he and his wife have sex.
Grieff, who is known for quickly solving cases, chuckles instantly after realizing the reasoning behind the mysterious payments. However, he rejects the case rather than explaining it because he feels the case doesn’t meet his criteria.
However, the whole situation intrigues Grieff’s assistant and fellow prisoner, Dillon. Dillon wonders about the mysterious set of payments for the remainder of the episode until the final few minutes.
The Reason Why Kreiner Keeps Receiving $253.55
In short, the mysterious payments that Senator Kreiner receives are the result of a humorous mix-up. The whole mix-up involves Kreiner’s wife and Selina Kedese, who is one of her assistants.
To learn everything, we need to go back 30 years when Kreiner had allegedly sexually assaulted two women at college. Besides the two, Kreiner apparently assaulted a third victim as well who never came forward.
The third victim eventually turns out to be Selina Kedese who helps in dealing with Mrs Kreiner’s accounts.
Grieff Solves The $253.55 cents Mystery Payment Problem
Grieff ultimately solves the case using his deduction skills and using all the small scraps of information available. He assumes that Selina revealed about the sexual assault during a private conversation with Mrs Kreiner. This is something that eventually bothers Mrs Kreiner a lot, completely turning around her life.
Mrs Kreiner who is unsurprisingly traumatized every time she has sex with her husband, would have sought a therapist’s help. However, she wouldn’t want her husband from learning that she knows about the discovery and would have paid the therapist using a secret account, while entrusting the payments to Selina.
However, this is where things get interesting as Grieff speculates that Selina, who is in her 50s has poor eyesight. As such, she has trouble reading texts and letters on her phone. Selina would have read Mrs Kreiner’s instructions to “Pay therapist $253.55 cents” as “Pay the rapist $253.33 cents.”
This explains why every time Kreiner and his wife have sex, she visits the therapist and thus pays the therapist. However, when this happens, Selina mistakenly sends $253.55 to the man who raped her 30 years earlier – i.e. Mr Kreiner.
