Napoli have simply dominated the 2022/23 campaign so far topping the league since way back in September.

A title win this year, would mean their first ever since back in 1990 when Diego Maradona led the side to a league title win. It would also bring back the Italian ‘Scudetto’ back to Naples.

Meaning and history of the Italian ‘Scudetto’

The term Scudetto literally translates means ‘little shield’ in Italian, referring to the Italian tricolour flag (green, white, and red) inside a small gold shield. In the context of the Italian league, the Scudetto refers to the badge, which only the reigning champions of Serie A can wear it on their kits.

Despite the Scudetto becoming synonymous with winning the Serie A title, the Scudetto itself is not a trophy. In Italy people widely use the jargon ‘winning the Scudetto’ to associate winning the Italian league trophy. However, the Scudetto is actually more of a symbol than silverware.

That particular badge, or scudetto, comprises of a patch designed in the colours of the Italian flag. The badge is applied to the official team jerseys throughout the entire next season. It serves as a representative symbol of their position as the reigning champions and as the top team in Italy. Only one team is allowed to don the patch in any given season.

Nonetheless, the winners of the Serie A do indeed receive a trophy as well, since back in 1961. however, the Scudetto is more revered and has more cultural significance.
