The meaning of the knife rule is quite superstitious as it says, it’s bad luck to close a pocketknife that has been opened by someone else.
So, it’s a good thing to give someone a pocket knife closed. Anyone can open it, and use it but you have to return it closed, with the blade firmly inside its cover.
If someone is giving you an open pocket knife to use or to borrow, you have to return it open, which is not the safest option but it will avoid bad luck.
