In this edition, seven new events have been added and, one of the new sporting events that have been recently added to the Winter Olympic Games that is going to take place in Beijing 2022 is monobob, which is an individual version of bobsleigh.

The sport is named from the Greek word ‘mónos’ which means single. This sport has been added to increase female participation in Olympic bobsleigh, by including the two-woman competition. The men already have two events: four-man and two-man.
In recent years, a positive sign is that this sport in recent year is that it has witnessed an increase in female participation in the sport. The Monobob sleigh is around 2.30 metres in length and weighs around 130 kg.
Being an individual sport, the competitors of monobob will take on the roles of pushing, driving, and breaking in a sled that weighs over 350 pounds. But on the other hand, in a two or four-person race the responsibilities are divided.
Though it is believed that bobsleigh could only be a team sport but to your surprise, this time, for the first time in the history of any sporting event, the Olympic Winter Games has introduced the mono bob competition as an individual event that is exclusive to female athletes during the Beijing 2022.
This monobob event was before as a part of the program of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lillehammer 2016 and Lausanne 2020, where both the genders participated, which proved as a real revolution for this sport. This sport has been already a part of the Winter Games program since the very first edition in Chamonix in 1924.
For decades, the world of bobsleigh has been dominated by teams that use the F1 technology and aerospace engineering that is designed with the fastest possible bobs, while keeping their innovative research into aerodynamics closely under wraps.
For the monobob competition, there are a few athletes we should look forward to for this Olympic Games are USA’s Kaillie Humphries, the two-time Olympic two-woman bobsleigh champion, and Elana Meyers Taylor, the overall World Monobob Series champion in 2021-2022.
Other top- athletes to keep an eye, who are competing from other countries are Cynthia Appiah and Christine de Bruin from Canada and, Breeana Walker, the Australian bobsleigh athlete.
Canada’s Cynthia Appiah in an interview said, “A huge plus of mono is that you are your own person. If you mess up, it is completely on you.”
She further mentioned that she’s looking forward to the solo competition to test the individual athletes and is eyeing the gold.
