The transgender comedian posted a video on her TikTok channel, @sunnlylcomedy, on November 9, 2022, that talked about the controversial topic of deadnaming. The video’s description said:

What Is A Deadname And Its Meaning
Deadname is the birth name of someone in the trans and non-binary community (ENBY) who now goes by a different name that fits better with who they are. It is pretty much their old name before they changed. Deadnaming is when you refer to someone by their name before they became transgender, whether you mean to or not.

When someone goes through a transition, they often change their name to something they feel more comfortable with and that better shows who they are. If you call a transgender person “dead,” they might think you don’t respect them. Dr. Jason Lambrese, a child and teen psychiatrist, says the following:
“It can remind them of a time in their lives when they weren’t sure of who they were. Calling them “dead” could bring them back to those bad times in their lives. And often, depression and anxiety go hand in hand with gender dysphoria.”
The Controversy Over Sunny Laprade’s TikTok Video And The Deadname Case
On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, early in the morning, Laprade posted the video to her TikTok.
She said that someone had guessed her deadname in her TikTok comments “as a joke, by accident.” She went on to say that every time she mentioned her deadname, the comment section was full of people trying to be funny by guessing “wacky and unusual” names.
Guessing isn’t the problem, but the comedian says her real deadname is “weird and unusual,” and a user accidentally guessed it.
