Following Amera FC’s 3-2 loss to archrival Persebaya, supporters from both teams ran onto the pitch and clashed with each other. According to East Java Police Chief, the police attempted to control the supporters by firing tear gas, which resulted in a stampede. Kanjuruhan is also Arema FC’s home stadium, and due to the occurrence of violent confrontations, Persebaya fans were not authorised to purchase game tickets. Despite this, the stadium’s capacity of 38,000 was exceeded by 4,000 people. More than 40,000 people were gathered at the arena to watch the game.
Zainudin Amali, Indonesia’s sports minister, informed Kompas TV that the government will evaluate stadium spectator safety or may altogether ban them. The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has announced that the premier league in Indonesia, BRI Liga 1, will be suspended for a week following this incident.
There have been several incidents between rival teams in the past that have resulted in fan violence. One of the worst football stadium accidents occurred in 1989 in England, when 96 Liverpool fans were killed due to an overcrowded fence enclosure at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield.
