The harmony at Chelsea that was so admired as they went on to win the UEFA Champions League is no longer there owing to Romelu Lukaku, know his stats and goals
A lot has happened since, and among them is a big money move for Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku. After a great season at Inter Milan, aiding the Italian giants win the Serie A, Chelsea moved to hand the forward a second stint at the club, at a transfer fee of £97.5m.
Romelu Lukaku Chelsea Goals And Stats 2021-22
It was all good at the start, with Lukaku repaying the faith with four goals in four games as Chelsea emerged as real contenders for the Premier League title. However, the goals soon dried up and an ankle injury would further hamper his progress. Lukaku made it even worse in an interview, after insinuating discomfort at Chelsea.
In the interview, Lukaku seemed to praise his former team and belittle his Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and his sentiments didn’t go down well with the manager and fans. The striker was initially left out of the team and had to apologize before getting back. Despite all these, he is yet to find his footing.
It has all been destabilizing for him at Chelsea and in the last 13 league matches he’s played in, Lukaku has managed just two goals. It was easier to successfully bet on him scoring in the earlier days of the season and Chelsea winning easily.

For starters, Lukaku hasn’t found the care and attention he enjoyed at Inter Milan. At the Italian giants, Antonio Conte would structure his team to play to Lukaku’s strengths, for example designing the 3-5-2 system so Lukaku can play in a twin strike role with Lautaro Martinez and it flourished. At Chelsea, he is forced to operate as a lone striker, supported by two wide players in the flanks and it means he has to play most of the matches with his back on goal, which he earlier admitted he detests.

Also, Tuchel hasn’t been easy on the Belgian, and it just serves to pile the pressure on him. After the loss to Manchester City, Tuchel was clear that Lukaku showed a clear lack of positional awareness and composure. He called on Lukaku to be part of the team play and build up. Even before Tuchel’s words had settled, Lukaku was a subject of the boos from Chelsea fans as the team drew 1-1 at Brighton.
His form has truly dipped, but the circumstances have dealt severely with his confidence. The fact that he hasn’t had a regular strike partner or faces in attack means he has regularly been forced to adjust. This has tampered with both his stability and consistency, and no wonder he misses Inter, and Lautaro.
Injuries to key wingbacks Ben Chilwell and Reece James have hit Lukaku hard, as he now lacks the little support or service that came his way.
For the investment made in signing Lukaku, it is clear that he will be with the Blues for the long term and if Tuchel hopes to get silverware, he will have to find a way to work with the big Belgian.
