Impact Player Rule Explained
During the toss, each team will be allowed to name four substitutes on the team sheet. Of these four, only one may be used as an impact player during a match. Only one Impact player can be used by either team.
Players in the starting XI can be replaced by Impact Player before the 14th over of an innings. When introducing the impact player, the team captain, head coach/manager should inform the field umpire or the fourth umpire before the end of the current over.
During batting, a team can introduce its Impact Player at the fall of wickets or during the innings break. As Impact Player is introduced, he can bat and may also bowl his full quota of four overs in uninterrupted innings. If somehow, the player gets retired hurt at that moment the Impact Player can be introduced to replace the player only at the end of the progressing over.
The Impact Player will also be allowed to bat. However, the substituted player will not be permitted to participate further in the game, not even as a substitute player. According to MCC Law 24.1, if a player gets injured while fielding in the middle of an over then the substitute fielders will come into effect. If the injured player is replaced with an Impact player, so he will not be allowed to take part in the game. The fielding side can only introduce an impact player after finishing the over.
Is Impact Player Rule going to be used in other tournaments such as IPL?
At present, there is no official communication as to whether the BCCI intends to introduce the rule into the IPL or other tournaments as well. We will have to wait for the official announcement for BCCI.
