SC Not Happy With Praful Patel Interference In AIFF Functioning as Indian Football gets banned by FIFA
FIFA, the world’s governing body of football, said on Tuesday that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been suspended with immediate effect. The FIFA Council Bureau made the choice with unanimity. The decision was made as a result of improper outside involvement, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes.

The AIFF hadn’t had a new president in 13 years. Praful Patel had completed three four-year terms and was not eligible for standing as president again. This was as per laws laid down in the National Sports Code.

Against former Indian soccer chief and NCP leader Praful Patel, a Committee of Directors (CoA) appointed by the Supreme Court of India filed a contempt petition on Wednesday, charging him with “impliedly” admitting to having “organised” a letter from the Asian Soccer Confederation (AFC) and FIFA threatening a ban on India.
The CoA has requested that the court enjoin Patel from holding any soccer-related posts in the future, including but not limited to those in FIFA and the AFC, where he presently holds the vice-presidential positions.
SC Not Happy With Praful Patel’s Interference In AIFF Functioning
On Thursday, the Supreme Court issued a warning to the state football associations that it would “exercising its authority” if Praful Patel, the deposed AIFF president and NCP leader, showed up at their meetings and obstructed the course of justice.
The top court declared that it will step in if there is any attempt to sabotage India’s hosting of the FIFA-U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2022.
After learning that a meeting with FIFA officials is scheduled for Thursday evening, a bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and A.S. Bopanna declined to hear the modification requests submitted by the Centre and State Football Associations as well as the COA’s contempt petition against Patel for allegedly “interfering with the proceedings” of the top court.
Due to a delay in finalising its constitution, the All India Football Federation (AIFF), a crucial prerequisite for the prestigious tournament to be held in the nation, was unable to hold elections in a timely manner. This put the AIFF at the centre of a controversy.
A three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA), including former chief election commissioner S.Y., was established by the supreme court while the delay persisted. Quraishi, former Supreme Court justice Anil Dave, and ex-Indian football captain Bhaskar Ganguly will be in charge of running the AIFF’s daily operations.
Despite being dismissed by the SC, Patel allegedly met with 35 intervening member associations on August 6 despite continuing threats from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to punish the AIFF for failing to organise the election. Patel serves as the vice president of the AFC and is a member of the FIFA executive council.
