Binny will be replacing former India captain Sourav Ganguly, whose three-year tenure as board chairman came to an end.
Ganguly will reportedly now run for President of the Cricket Association of Bengal.
Roger Binny New BCCI President
The announcement about Roger Binny comes just after the BCCI held its 36th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, President Sourav Ganguly, Vice-President Rajiv Shukla, Treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal, and Binny all attended the event.
Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee had earlier made some comments about the Sourav Ganguly-BCCI issue.
Mamata alleged that Ganguly was “illegally” axed from the BCCI position. She also requested the PM to give permission to Ganguly for contesting in the ICC polls.
How Does The BCCI Elect Its President?
Generally, the BCCI elects its new President at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting. Each of the 30 BCCI affiliates will cast a vote each for their desired candidate.
As the chairman of the meeting, the outgoing president also gets a vote. To make matters fair, the BCCI rotates the position zone by zone across India.
Each new president can serve as the BCCI president for a maximum period of three years. The BCCI groups all the states into four zones, depending on their location in India – North zone, Central zone, East zone, West zone, and South zone.
The annual general meeting, also known as AGM, is a gathering of all of the BCCI’s general members.
The President is the highest post in the BCCI, which is the apex organization responsible for running cricket in India.
Despite the post being an honorary one, many still consider it a highly reputable post due to the game’s popularity in India and the company’s monetary cachet.
Over the years, Presidents have included powerful politicians, royalty, and businessmen. Some few examples are Madhavrao Scindia, Inderjit Singh Bindra, and Jagmohan Dalmiya. The president is paid Rs.5 crore per year for a tenure of 3 years.
