Former union minister and veteran congress leader Manikrao Gavit has been in the news because he died recently at the age of 87 in Nasik, know his age and family

Manikrao Gavit, a former union minister, and leader of the Congress party passed away on Saturday at a Nashik, Maharashtra, hospital.

Since then, people from all over India send their condolences to him. Among other political figures, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for Manikrao Gavit’s passing on Saturday and noted that he worked hard to empower tribal groups.

The tweet from the prime minister’s office conveyed condolences:

“Saddened by the passing away of former Union Minister Shri Manikrao Gavit Ji. He was one of the most experienced Parliamentarians and he made many efforts for the empowerment of tribal communities. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”

Who Was Manikrao Gavit?

Manikrao Gavit was a well-known politician who had been affiliated with Indian National Congress Party for a long time. He has been in the news because he died recently.

He was born on 29 October 1934 in Dhudipada, Nandurbar District, Bombay Presidency, British India. He was born into a tribal family.

He was married. However, we don’t know much about her wife. He has two children. His daughter’s name is Nirmala Gavit who is a former MLA and his son’s name is Bharat who is a BJP politician.

He died on 17 September 2022. Nashik, Maharashtra, India. He died when he was 87 years old.

His Career

Manikrao Gavit, who was also a member of the Indian National Congress (INC), served as the representative for Nandurbar from 1980 to 2014 and set a record by winning the country’s general elections nine times in a row.

Apart from serving as a member in Lok Sabha 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th, he also became a part of many government-level and party-level committees.

He served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs during his 14th term in office until being requested to retire on April 6, 2008. It is then when he alleged that Sonia Gandhi, the president of the Indian National Congress, allegedly informed him that she was under pressure to have him removed.

In the general election held in India in 2009, he was elected for the eighth time in a row from the Nandurbar seat.

Later, then-President Pratibha Patil appointed Gavit as the pro tem Speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha. Until a new Speaker was elected, he served as pro tem speaker and carried out the speaker’s responsibilities. He held the position of State Minister for the Department of Social Justice.

Later in his years, he lost the election in 2014.
