Who was Darren Lewis?
Darren Lewis was an American football player who was born on November 7, 1968 in Dallas, Texas and attended the Carter High School.
A look at Darren Lewis’ career
Lewis committed to Texas A&M after having an outstanding football career in high school, where he went on to break numerous records. He spent four seasons for the Aggies and after that, the player announced himself for NFL the Draft in 1991.
Darren was a standout player for Texas A&M, surpassing Eric Dickerson’s record in the Southwest Conference but after that, his career was limited to addiction.
Excellent at Dallas’ exclusive Carter High School, Lewis was often listed among the country’s top prospects in 1987.
He overtook Earl Campbell’s record of 4,450 yards of rushes in 1987–1990 set by Dickerson before bowl numbers were taken into consideration.
He concluded his career at fifth on the NCAA career rushing chart, behind only Tony Dorsett, Charles White, Herschel Walker, and Archie Griffin himself.
Known by his vicious running style as “Tank,” he was a two-time All-American while attending Texas A&M. On the career rushing statistics, he still has 1,309 yards left to gain to move up to second place.
Lewis was assured he would test clean, but he claimed to have been introduced to cocaine at parties and by prospective agents throughout the NFL selection process.
Despite never having tested positive for drugs, he was arrested in 1993 on charges of domestic abuse. Lewis was still battling addiction when he returned to Dallas from the NFL, despite his best efforts to change his ways once the league finished.
Lewis won the SWC Offensive Player of the Year title in 1988. In addition to these honors, he was named to one First Team All-American and two First Teams All-SWC.
