At Northwestern State, Sidney Thornton was one of the best running backs. The Steelers picked up the New Orleans, Louisiana native in the second round (48th overall) in 1977. While in the Steelers, Thornton did well with the little opportunities he was given as a backup to Franco Harris, a future inductee to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Thornton carried for 103 yards and two touchdowns in his first season (1977). His importance grew over the next three seasons, culminating in 1979, when he had a career year with 585 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. As a receiver, Thornton was effective, as he made 16 catches for 231 yards and four touchdowns.

Sidney Thornton played on the Steelers teams that won the championship in 1978 and 1979, establishing Pittsburgh as the first dynasty of the Super Bowl era. In seven postseason contests, Thornton rushed for 81 yards, scored once on the ground, and caught four passes for 56 yards.

The former Northwestern State standout has 46 grabs for 515 yards. And six receiving scores to go along with his 356 carries for 1,512 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.
