The European Weightlifting Championships, which is one of the most highly anticipated events on the weightlifting calendar, will take place this weekend starting on 15 April.
2023 European Weightlifting Championships preview
Besides offering players with the prestige of finishing on the podium at one of the biggest weightlifting competitions, the tournament will also play a key role in the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifiers.
Athletes need to participate in a minimum of three major competitions aside from other prerequisites in order to be eligible to participate at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. And much to the delight of athletes, the upcoming European Weightlifting Championships will serve as one of those major competitions.
Given below are the different weight classes for which the winners will receive medals:
Women: -45kg, -49kg, -55kg, -59kg, -64kg, -71kg, -76kg, -81kg, -87kg, +87kg
Men: -55kg, -61kg, -67kg, -73kg, -81kg, -89kg, -96kg, -102kg, -109kg, +109kg
European Weightlifting Championships 2023 schedule
The European Weightlifting Championships are scheduled to take place in Yerevan, Armenia between 15 – 23 April 2023. Armenia will be hosting the European Championship for the first time in the competition’s history.
Prior to the start of the competition, the preliminary schedule shows that the women’s athletes from first three weight classes will open the championships on 15 April. The following eight competition days will then see both the men and women take part.
European Weightlifting Championships 2023 athletes to watch
Over 350 weightlifters from across 40 nations are set to take part in the European Weightlifting Championships 2023 this weekend. The list of athletes includes several world, European, and Olympic champions. Given below are some of the athletes to watch out for:
Lasha Talakhadze (Georgia, Men’s +109kg)
Lasha Talakhadze is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020) from Georgia. Talakhadze is also a six-time world champion, six-time European champion. Aside from his competition titles, he is also a world record holder in the snatch, clean and jerk and total in the men’s +109kg category.
Emily Campbell (Great Britain, Women’s +87kg)
Emily Campbell is an Olympic silver medalist (Tokyo 2020) who hails from Great Britain. Campbell is also a two-time European champion and two-time world championships medalist.
Antonino Pizzolato (Italy, Men’s -89kg)
The Olympic bronze medalist (Tokyo 2020, -81kg category) is also a three-time European champion, and a world championships bronze medalist
Loredana Toma (Romania, Women’s -71kg)
Toma is a four-time European champion and a two-time world champion.
