The European Super League was launched on April 18 with 12 clubs as founding members, but six Premier League clubs faced more scrutiny as football has always been for the fans
The sides who had decided to join the European Super League will pay a total of £22 million after being fined for their antics. The ‘Big Six’ reached the settlement over plans to join the failed Super League in April with each club asked to dish out a 3.5 million pound punishment.
European Super League: Clubs Warned Of Calamitous Future Action
The clubs will need to pay a 35 million pound feed and will have to endure a 30 point deduction if they sign up to similar plans in future. The figure was announced in a joint statement by the Premier League and the Football Association in a statement issued.
A statement from the Premier League read, “As a gesture of goodwill, the clubs have collectively agreed to make a contribution of £22m which will go towards the good of the game, including new investment in support for fans, grassroots football and community programmes.”
Premier League Clubs Apologise After Withdrawing From The Super League
This year’s Champions League finalists Chelsea and Manchester City were the first ones to
withdraw themselves from the competition followed by other Premier League clubs.
What did each club say?
• Arsenal said they joined the Super League because they were afraid of being left behind.
• Manchester United said that they remain committed to working with others across the
football community.
• Liverpool said the club had received representations from various key stakeholders which lead them to backing out.
• Tottenham stressed upon the importance of a possible new structure.
• Chelsea said that they had decided that they realised their mistake after the outpour of angst from supporters.
• Manchester City said they have formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group.
UEFA Stops Investigation Into Three Remaining Clubs
Meanwhile, UEFA has for the time being decided to clampdown on its ongoing investigations into Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Despite warning of dire consequences given these three clubs refusal to curb their plans of partaking in the European Super League, UEFA has decided to cool its stance for the moment.
