2022 European Chess Club Cup Results Today, Best Performers of Day 7, Final Standings, And Tournament Winners
On Sunday, Novy Bor defeated Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier to win the open division crown of 2022 European Club Cup for first time since their first European gold in 2013. As the only team to complete the campaign unbeaten in women’s division, third-seeded ASVOe Pamhagen emerged as the unexpected champions. At open division standings, seventh-seed Offerspill settled for seventh place despite superb show by Magnus Carlsen with 5 points in 6 games. For top-seed CSU Superbet, Viswanathan Anand finished with a respectable 3.5 points from 6 games but couldn’t guide his team towards podium finish as Clichy-Echecs-92 bagged silver medal and Schachclub Viernheim took bronze medal.
Novy Bor completed in fine fashion with a 3.5-2.5 victory over Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier despite needing only a draw for gold medal. Harikrishna’s victory over GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who was duped late in the endgame following some really in-depth theory in Grunfeld, was a crucial match. Meanwhile, Clichy defeated Offerspill to take home the silver medal and Carlsen couldn’t grumble after escaping with a draw against GM Parham Maghsoodloo. After failing to defeat Slovenia’s Ljubljana Chess Club in the last round, top-seed Superbet team came in a disappointing sixth place and missed out on any potential medal.
In Mayrhofen, Austria, from October 3–9, 2022, the 37th European Club Cup and the 26th European Women’s Chess Club Cup were held. Both competitions were Swiss seven-round affairs, with teams of six players for the open section and teams of four for the ladies. The game was played under a time limit of 90 minutes for 40 moves and an additional 30 minutes with a 30 second increment beginning with move 1.
