Matteo Berrettini loses his first grand slam final vs Novak Djokovic

Matteo Berrettini, ranked ninth in the world, entered Wimbledon 2021 as the seventh seed. The 25-year old’s recent results had made him a fierce challenger for Novak Djokovic’s title. Berrettini won the Cinch Championships before Wimbledon 2021.

He overcame the likes of Dan Evans, Stefano Travaglia, Andy Murray to reach the final. At the decider, Berrettini beat Cameron Norrie, becoming the first debutant since Boris Becker to win the Queen’s Club tournament.

Matteo Berrettini’s Wimbledon 2021 campaign was no less incredible leading up to the final. He even bounced back remarkably well from 5-3 to win the first set in the tie-breaker eventually. However, the 25-year old could not maintain that level of intensity.

Novak Djokovic had little difficulties in winning the following three sets. As a result, the Serbian created a plethora of records. Djokovic clinched his 20th grand slam title, equalling Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The 34-year old also became the fourth player in the open era to win successive Wimbledon titles after Roger Federer, Bjorn Borg, and Pete Sampras.
