Prediction

In the second round of the 2022 Chennai Open, 2014 Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard will face local favourite Karman Kaur Thandi.

After recovering from surgery and spending year on the sidelines, Bouchard competed in the WTA 125k Vancouver Open but was eliminated in the first round. Additionally, she participated in the US Open qualifying rounds before being eliminated in the second round by Linda Noskova.

Later, Bouchard was given a wildcard to compete in the Chennai Open, where she faced Joanne Zuger in the opening round. In the first set, she had a 4-1 advantage, but her opponent rallied back to tie the score and regain serve. To break her opponent’s serve and force a tie-break, the Canadian first saved a set point at 6-5. Bouchard won the subsequent tie-break to win the set. More games were won by one player in the second set, which Bouchard dominated to win 7-6(4), 6-2. Since March 2021, she hadn’t won in the main draw before.

On the other hand, given a wildcard to compete in Chennai, Karman Kaur Thandi was paired up against eighth-seeded Chloe Paquet in the opening round. In the first set, the Indian had a 3-1 lead, but her opponent won five of the following six games to win the match. In the second set’s sixth game, Thandi escaped a break point before breaking Paquet’s serve to take a 4-3 lead. The 24-year-old served out the set to force a decision after a few games. The Indian quickly tied the match after falling behind 2-0 in the third set.

From 3-2, Thandi won the next four games in a row to take the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Thandi is the more experienced player and has lately competed in more matches than Bouchard while the Canadian, who is trying to make a comeback, performed admirably against Zuger in the opening round. In the second set, Bouchard maintained her dominance to win the match after blowing her advantage in the first. She served exceptionally effectively in crucial situations and had a respectable amount of stroke production.

The ball was hit by Thandi fairly forcefully, and she is also a competent server. She had slightly better serving statistics in the first round than the Canadian, and if she wants to have a chance to win, she must maintain or improve upon those figures.

Thandi has the potential to cause trouble for Bouchard if she can identify the pattern in her game, which may occasionally become rather predictable. Both players have a chance to go deep and climb the rankings by taking advantage of this opportunity. However, compared to Thandi, Bouchard has more experience competing in major tournaments, which could compensate for her lack of match play in this situation. Although the outcome of the match could change, it is most likely that the Canadian will prevail in the end.
