Journalist Mike Coppinger reported that the duo are “finalizing a deal” to meet in April at 154 lbs.
Errol Spence Jr vs Keith Thurman
Earlier, WBC Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., vowed that he’d never fight Keith Thurman. This is because Thurman refused to give Spence a title shot in the previously. However, it looks like Errol will have to check back on that vow.
Despite the confirmation about the Errol Spence Jr vs Keith Thurman, Errol will not have his belts on the line. Spence who has a record of 28-0, 22 Kos currently holds three of the four major titles at welterweight. However, since the matchup with Thurman will take place at the junior middleweight category, he is not at risk of losing his belts.
The fight will take place in April 2023 but an exact date and tickets haven’t been announced yet.
A special permit
Furthermore, according Coppinger, WBA president Gilberto Mendoza told ESPN that he “granted Spence a special permit”. The special permit will allow Spence to fight outside the weight class without risking losing his 147-pound title.
However, there is a condition where Spence will have only 60 days from the fight, to close a deal for an undisputed welterweight championship bout with Terence Crawford. Spence and Crawford initially engaged in negotiations last year and their fight is much-awaited.
If Spence fails to take up the fight, the other condition is that the 32-year-old will have to take on the winner of the Eimantas Stanionis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr fight.
Irrespective of the case, the fight between Spence and Thurman will definitely be an exciting one. Thurman will prove to be a tough opponent as no other boxer has yet managed to genuinely dominate him despite having his share of close shaves. In fact, stopping Thurman, or even just winning a wide decision, could still be considered a major achievement for Spence.
