Much talk of Erling Haaland going for Dixie Dean's 1927-28 English club record of 63 goals in a season. Dean, of course, played in the days before proper European club competition but the club where he set that record have, like Man City, won exactly one European Cup-Winners Cup. pic.twitter.com/KisNUqe4Cx

To put things into perspective, the Norway international has so far scored 48 goals in 42 City games in the 2022/23 campaign, which includes 32 goals in the Premier League.
Premier League Golden Boot record
Erling Haaland is getting closer to the Premier League Golden Boot record of 34 goals. The record is currently jointly-held between Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole the difference being in a 42-game season.
However, Haaland still has a long way to go when considering the overall goal record in a English football season. That particular record is held by Everton icon Dixie Dean. The former England international has an unbelievable pre-war record of 60 goals in 39 first division games.
Dixie Dean brief bio and career
Dixie Dean is an English former professional footballer who first rose to prominence after joining Everton. Dean arrived from his hometown club Tranmere Rovers back in 1925 when he was just aged 18.
While at Everton, Dean scored a sensational 349 goals in 399 games for the Toffees between 1925 to 1937. In his first season at the club, Dean scored 33 goals at Goodison Park andĀ went on to win two top-flight championships in 1927/28 and 1931/32.
Dean also helped his side win the FA Cup in 1932 and made the distinct history of becomingĀ the first ever footballer to wear the number 9 jersey.
In the international sphere as well, Dean was also a prolific scorer scoring 18 goals in just 16 appearances. He scored two hat-tricks in the process.
Dixie Dean legacy
After his death in 1980, Everton have celebrated his legacy and even built a statue in 2001 outside Goodison Park. Besides that, the club also honored him by Dean inducting him into the inaugural English Football Hall of Fame.
Erling Haaland vs Dixie Dean goal record
Although Haaland has had a sensational and groundbreaking start at the Etihad this season, he will most probably not be able to overtake Dean’s single-season goals record. Dean scored a staggering 60 goals in 39 First Division Games back in the 1927/28 campaign.
Moreover, Dean also has a record of 65 goals across all competitions that same season, which Haaland will probably not be able to break. However, if Haaland manages to average almost two goals a game for the remainder of the campaign he still has an outside chance.
Back when Dean was playing, there was no European Cup nor the League Cup, as both competitions began only in 1955/56 and 1960/61, respectively.
