2022 English Open: Mark Selby vs Luca Brecel Final Match Events, Score, & Summary
After the first session ended with score of 4-4, Selby won the first frame of evening session thanks to his flawless 51 clearance. In the next frame, Selby made break of 61 to take a commanding 6-4 lead. In response to this, Brecel hit 122 break and reduced deficit to 6-5. However, Brecel made errors in the pivotal 12th frame and allowed Selby to take 7-5 lead. Even in 13th frame, Selby held his nerve to score the last red after trapping his opponent and come within cusp of victory by taking 8-5 lead.
Brecel made an effort to close the gap and attempted a 147-break in the fourteenth frame before settling for 113. However, Brecel’s happiness was short-lived, as Selby won the English Open by settling the match in the very next frame with a break of 87. Following this victory, Selby has ended his 19-month title drought, which began since his Crucible title in 2021 May. Despite his heartbreaking loss, Brecel has bagged £35,000 and climbed to Top-10 in the world rankings.
