Prediction

In the opening round of the 2022 Korea Open, Japanese player Moyuka Uchijima, who is ranked 126th, will compete against World Number 77 Emma Raducanu.

After failing to successfully defend her US Open title, Raducanu, who had been ranked a top 20 player for the whole season, has dropped to number 83 in the world. The British player lost a significant number of points from having won the championship in 2021 when she was blown off the court in the opening round of the season’s last Grand Slam. In her first match back on the court, Raducanu defeated Dayana Yastremska in straight sets last week while competing in the Slovenia Open.

Any hope for a change in luck, however, was quickly dashed when, in round two of the competition, despite being a 9/2 outsider to win it, Anna-Lena Friedsam eliminated her. Raducanu will be confident that she can advance in the competition despite facing a competitor who has never achieved a world ranking higher than 125.

Meanwhile, Uchijima has demonstrated a lot of promise on the ITF tour, which has helped her reach her career-best ranking of 125th in the world, but she hasn’t yet made a major impression on the WTA tour. Uchijima hasn’t actually played at this level until this season, when he competed in the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open qualifications in addition to last week’s appearance in the Chennai Open main tournament.

Uchijima has triumphed in four of her qualifying matches in the aforementioned Grand Slams; yet, she has yet to enter any major’s main draw. A player that has skill but has not yet achieved a main draw triumph at the top level, especially when you consider that she also lost in Chennai’s first round. It is to be seen if she can use Raducanu’s declining confidence to her advantage and secure her first victory.

Raducanu is the overwhelming favourite to win this. Even though the Briton is predicted to triumph tomorrow, there is enough reason to suspect things may not be quite so simple, and Uchijima may even take home a set.
