Prediction

The 2022 Slovenia Open second round will feature Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, taking on qualifier Anna-Lena Friedsam.

Raducanu took a wildcard to play in Slovenia in response to her dismal loss at the US Open. She faced Dayana Yastremska in the first round. She led the opening set 4-1, but her opponent was able to win back one of the breaks. However, Raducanu halted that turn around immediately. In the following game, she earned another serve break to go ahead 5-2 before serving out the set with ease. The teen gained an early serve break and a 3-1 lead in the second set. Yastremska withdrew from the competition due to an injury while still holding a lead and being just one game away from victory. In the end, the result was 6-2, 5-3 ret. favouring Raducanu.

On the other hand, In the Portoroz main draw, Anna-Lena Friedsam qualified and received a ticket and she faced Hana Mandlikova, a four-time Grand Slam champion, Elizabeth Mandlik in the first round.

Friedsam got off to a bad start when she became the target of an opening set bagel. In the second set, Mandlik continued to overpower her as she jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. The German, on the other hand, started to rally at this point and went on to win six of the next seven games to take the set and force a decider. In the decisive set, Friedsam maintained this pace and easily established a 5-0 lead. Mandlik broke her losing skid with a hold of service, but it was already too late. The German finished the match by serving it out to earn a comeback victory of 0-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Mandlik appeared to be superior against Friedsam in the opening round, but Friedsam staged a courageous comeback to upset her opponent. Now Raducanu will subject her to a much greater test. The teen’s serving statistics in the opening game were somewhat below average but still better than the Germans.

She needs to return to the offensive playing style that helped her win the US Open the year before because Raducanu’s game is still generally a little more passive than it was. Friedsam hasn’t had much success on the WTA tour recently, so even if there are some setbacks along the way, she ought to be able to win out in the end.
