Prediction
Elena Rybakina and Katerina Siniakova are set to meet for the seventh time on a tour-level fight.
First-time Grand Slam champions typically suffer from a mild hangover and regress in their subsequent matches. Elena Rybakina didn’t show it even though she was losing against players with exceptional quality (Daria Kasatkina, Madison Keys, and Cori Gauff) in the weeks prior to the US Open. But following her defeat in New York against Clara Burel, something started to go awry.
Later, the Kazakh travelled to Portoroz and put up a dismal display against Laura Siegemund in the opening round, coming back to win after falling behind 2-5 in the pivotal set and surviving a match point. She has, fortunately, significantly improved throughout the course of the week. The 23-year-old, who finally played as well in her all-out, aggressive tennis as she had in London a few months earlier, completely demolished Tereza Martincova and Ana Bogdan.
Meanwhile, Rybakina will compete against the world’s best doubles player, Katerina Siniakova, in the Slovenia Open final in 2022. More over a month ago, the 26-year-old won a championship at a tough 100K ITF tournament in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, but she only earned one singles victory throughout the North American hard-court season. She is back to her best in Portoroz, though, dropping just one set to go to the final (against the defending champion Jasmine Paolini).
The only problem is that a rain delay forced Siniakova to play both of her semifinal and quarterfinal matches on the court for four hours on Saturday. Although she lived, Rybakina might not have much of her after all. The Kazakh will be able to exert her terrible influence and seize control of the situation much more easily than normal in that scenario. In both of their most recent matches on hard courts, Rybakina prevailed. In 2022, they only engaged in one match, with Siniakova quitting in Madrid after a 0-6 1-0 record (clay).
The pick of the match is Rybakina and she is expected to win tonight.
