Mostafa El-Abbadi died on 13th February 2017, at the age of 88 years, in Alexandria. El-Abbadi was a member at Egypt’s Supreme Council of Culture (SCC), Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), and l’Institut d’Egypte.

Mostafa El-Abbadi’s Family And Education
El-Abbadi was educated at the Universities of Egypt and the United Kingdom. Mostafa finished his undergraduate BA at University of Alexandria. At age of 22, he was awarded as a scholar by the Egyptian government to study at University of Cambridge. He graduated with a special BA and Ph.D. in ancient history at Cambridge and he received an honorary doctorate from University, du Quebec a Montreal.
Later on after completing his studies, he got married to the literary critic and scholar Azza Kararah, who died in year 2015. Mostafa’s father, Abdel-Hamid El-Abbadi, was a historian and founding dean of Faculty of Arts by profession, at University of Alexandria. He had two children, a son with his wife, and his both children are computer scientist. His son is Amr El Abbadi and his daughter’s name is Dr. Mohga El-Abbadi.

After completing his graduation, El-Abbadi became a lecturer and then a professor in Greco-Roman studies at University of Alexandria. Later on, Mostafa was credited with proposing the revival of the ancient library of Alexandria. The project was embraced by UNESCO in year 1986, and Bibliotheca Alexandrina was finished in year 2003.
He was later on critical of a few aspects of the project which are realized by the Egyptian government, telling the New York Times that the library was at risk of becoming “a cultural center” rather than fulfilling its “promise as a world-class research center.” He authored the Library of Alexandria entry in Encyclopedia Britannica. He served as president of the Archaeological Society of Alexandria and was an advisor to UNESCO.
