Haskins was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins, however he was released in less than two seasons due to uneven play and issues about his work ethic. Dwayne Haskins died after being struck by a dump truck.
Dwayne Haskins, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, died early Saturday morning after being struck by a dump truck while strolling on a South Florida roadway. Haskins was 24 years old at the time.
Haskins was declared dead at the scene, according to Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson Lt. Indiana Miranda. Miranda stated in an emailed statement that he was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was approaching traffic.
She didn’t elaborate on why Haskins was driving on the freeway at the time. The highway was closed for several hours as a result of the accident, and Miranda described it as “an open traffic homicide investigation.
Private life
Haskins was known by the nickname Simba, which he got from the main character in the 1994 film The Lion King. Because he had an afro at the time that reminded his mother of a lion’s mane, he adopted it as a child. He drew inspiration from the nickname and the film’s coming-of-age plot and utilised it to launch his own apparel line, Kingdom of Pride.
Mohamed Sanu, an NFL wide receiver, was his mentor in high school and college, whom he met through Mohamed Jabbie, one of his best friends and Sanu’s nephew. Haskins is a New Jersey native who grew up rooting for the New York Giants. Kalabrya Gondrezick was Haskins’ wife. -Haskins
Early years
Haskins was born in Highland Park, New Jersey, and relocated to Potomac, Maryland, with his family while he was in ninth grade. From 2013 until 2016, he attended Bullis School and played football there, passing for 5,308 yards and 54 touchdowns. He chose the University of Maryland over Rutgers University to play collegiate football, but after Maryland football coach Randy Edsall was fired in the middle of the season, he decided to attend Ohio State University.
Career
The Washington Redskins selected Haskins 15th overall in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Despite the fact that Haskins’ high school and college jersey number of 7 was unofficially retired by the Redskins in honour of quarterback Joe Theismann, whose career ended in 1985 due to a leg injury, he asked and was granted permission to wear it. Haskins signed a four-year rookie contract worth $14.37 million on May 9, 2019, which included a $8.47 million signing bonus.
On January 21, 202, Haskins signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Behind Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph, he was named the third-string quarterback. With the exception of one game, he did not play.
