Early Life Of Dustin Poirier, Family, Personal Story And Biography

Born on January 19, 1989, to father Darell Poirier and mother Jere’ Folley Chiasson in Lafayette, Louisiana, Dustin Poirier has been competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) since 2011. Dustin got into many street fights and brawls during his schooling and hence decided to drop out in ninth grade.

2009: Dustin Poirier became a professional mixed martial artist in 2009. He instantly had a noteworthy record of 7-0. Poirier initially participated in regional tournaments mainly across his home state Louisiana and the Southern part of the United States.

2010: Poirier made his ‘World Extreme Cagefighting’ (WEC) on August 18, 2010, at the WEC 50 event in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dustin Poirier faced the mighty Danny Castillo. Poirier fought till the last round but ended up losing the fight as Danny Castillo was declared as winner by unanimous decision.

After his WEC 50 defeat to Castillo, Dustin faced Zach Micklewright at the WEC 52 event on November 12, 2010. And Dustin did not fail to impress as he won the fight with a first-round TKO.

The World Extreme Cagefighting became the ‘Ultimate Fighting Championship,’ also known as UFC in 2010. So Dustin Poirier and other fighters of the WEC were transferred to the UFC.

In November 2010, the UFC Featherweight Champion José Aldo was set to face Josh Grispi at the UFC 125. Aldo pulled out of the event due to injury on November 23, 2010. Catching the opportunity, Poirier agreed to face Josh Grispi. Dustin Poirier vs Josh Grispi took place on January 1, 2011. The duo fought fierecly and Poirier ended up winning the fight by unanimous decision, marking his first UFC win.

2011: Poirier was supposed to face Brazil’s Rani Yahya on June 11, 2011, at the UFC 131. But Yahya suffered an injury and he was substituted by the British newbie Jason Young. Both the fighters fought till the end, and Poirier won against Young via unanimous decision.

Dustin Poirier then moved on to face Pablo Garza on November 12, 2011. Poirier’s D’arce choke move turned out to be handy and he defeated Garza in round 2.

2012: Poirier was set to fight Erik Koch on February 4, 2012, at the UFC 143 but, Koch pulled out of the session, due to injury, and he was replaced by Ricardo Lamas, who pulled out as well. After some days, Max Holloway stepped in to fight Poirier. Poirier defeated Holloway in the first round, with a triangle-armbar.

Poirier confronted Chan Sung Jung on May 15, 2012, at the main event fight. Jung defeated Poirier with a D’arce choke in the fourth round. Poirier then faced Jonathan Brookins on December 15, 2012, at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale. Poirier D’arce choked Brookings to win the fight.

2013: Poirier faced Cub Swanson in the co-headliner on February 16, 2013. Poirier lost the fight by unanimous decision. Poirier then fought Erik Koch on August 31, 2013, at the UFC 164. Poirier won the fight by unanimous decision. Poirier faced Diego Brandão on December 28, 2013, at the UFC 168. He knocked Brandão out to win the fight.

2014: Poirier confronted Akira Corassani at The Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale in 2014. He won the battle by TKO in the second round. Poirier then faced Conor McGregor on September 27, 2014, at UFC 178. He lost the battle by TKO in the first round. He then moved to the Lightweight Division.

2015: Poirier confronted Carlos Diego Ferreira in a lightweight fight on April 4, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 63. He won the battle through knockout in the first round. Poirier faced Yancy Medeiros on June 6, 2015, at UFC Fight Night 68. He won the battle through TKO in the first round.

2016: Poirier faced Joseph Duffy on January 2, 2016, at UFC 195. Poirier won the battle by unanimous decision. Poirier next confronted Bobby Green on June 4, 2016, at UFC 199. He won the battle through knockout in the first round. After that, Poirier fought Michael Johnson  on September 17, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 94. Poirier lost by a first-round knockout.

2017: Poirier fought Jim Miller on February 11, 2017, at UFC 208. Poirier won by unanimous decision. Poirier faced Eddie Alvarez on May 13, 2017, at UFC 211. This controversial fight was declared as ‘No Contest’ (NC) by referee Herb Dean. Poirier then fought Anthony Pettis on November 11, 2017, at UFC Fight Night 120. He won the battle through TKO after Pettis tapped out.

2018: Poirier faced Justin Gaethje on April 14, 2018. He won the battle by means of TKO in the fourth round.  Poirier then confronted Eddie Alvarez in a rematch on July 28, 2018. He won the battle by means of TKO in the second round.

2019: Poirier confronted UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway for the Interim UFC Lightweight Championship on April 13, 2019, at UFC 236. He won the fight by majority decision. Poirier then faced the mighty UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov on September 7, 2019. Khabib choked Poirier and defended his title.

2020: Poirier confronted Dan Hooker on June 27, 2020. He won the fight by unanimous decision.

2021: In 2021, Poirier faced Conor McGregor in a rematch of their 2014 match at UFC 257 on January 24, 2021. He won the battle through TKO in the second round. Poirier vs McGregor 3 was held on July 10, 2021, at UFC 264. Poirier won the battle through TKO after the match was ceased due to doctor stoppage.

Poirier will face Charles Oliveira for the UFC Lightweight Championship on December 11, 2021, at UFC 269.
